                            Philanthropy

Alpha Phi is the first fraternity to form its own Foundation. Since 1946, Alpha Phi has focused on heart disease and cardiac care as a philanthropic priority. In 1956, the Alpha Phi Foundation was formed and has made women’s cardiac care a priority in the lives of many young women. Today, research into the diagnosis and treatment of women's heart disease is still the primary interest of the Alpha Phi Foundation.

                            Red Dress Gala:
The Annual Red Dress Gala during Parent’s Weekend gives Alpha Phis the opportunity to roll out the red carpet (and gowns!) and invite their families and members of the community for an evening of auctions, entertainment, and philanthropy. In the 2010-2011 semester, we raised over $15,000 for the Alpha Phi Foundation.

                            Phi Ball:
Phi Ball is an Alpha Phi Dodgeball tournament is held in the fall. Fraternities compete against each other to raise money towards the Alpha Phi Foundation. This past year, the brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi won Phi Ball and helped us raise over $2,000 for cardiac care!

                            Heart Week:
During our annual Heart Week in the Spring, we have many opportunities for fraternities and sororities to get involved. The week begins with a "Hoops for Hearts" basketball and hula hoop tournament! Alpha Phi hosts a "Healthy Heart BBQ" to show the GW community how easy it is to eat heart healthy! In addition, participating teams help the sisters of Alpha Phi create valentines for children suffering from cardiac problems. The valentines are hand delivered and always heart felt. Everyone comes together for the Dating Game where fraternity boys compete for a date with a "phabulous" Alpha Phi! Pi Kappa Phi won Alpha Phi's heart this year and helped us raise over $4,000!

                            External Philanthropy:
In addition to raising thousands of dollars for the Alpha Phi Foundation each semester, the Iota Iota Chapter participates in a wide variety of community service events, such as Martha's Table, DC Reads, Relay for Life, Martin Luther King Day of Service, and AIDS and Homeless Walks. We also always participate in other Greek-letter organization philanthropy events on campus; we hold trophies from Tau Kappa Epsilon's Turkey Bowl, Beta Theta Pi’s Beta Cup, and Lambda Chi Alpha's Watermelon Fest – and more!
