Making a Difference

Alpha Phi is the first fraternity to form its own Foundation.  Since 1946, Alpha Phi has focused on heart disease and cardiac care as a philanthropic priority. In 1956, the Alpha Phi Foundation was formed and has made women’s cardiac care a priority in the lives of many young women.  Today, research into the diagnosis and treatment of women's heart disease is still the primary interest of the Alpha Phi Foundation.

Iota Iota hosts several major philanthropic events throughout the year. In the Fall, our PhiBall dodgeball tournament allows GW fraternities to compete for first place in an intense dodgeball tournament.

The Annual Red Dress Gala during Parent’s Weekend gives Alpha Phis the opportunity to roll out the red carpet (and gowns!) and invite their families and members of the community for an evening of auctions, entertainment, and philanthropy.  During Heart Week in the Spring, the Alpha Phi Dating Game gives lucky fraternity men a chance to win a free fabulous date with a "phabulous" Phi, and the Healthy Heart BBQ lets us show GW how easy and delicious it is to be heart healthy!

In addition to raising thousands of dollars for the Alpha Phi Foundation each semester, the Iota Iota Chapter participates in a wide variety of community service events, such as Martha's Table, DC Reads, Relay for Life, Martin Luther King Day of Service, and AIDS and Homeless Walks.  We also always participate in other Greek-letter organization philanthropy events on campus; we hold trophies from Tau Kappa Epsilon's Turkey Bowl, Beta Theta Pi’s Beta Cup, and Lambda Chi Alpha's Watermelon Fest – and more!

Caring for Sisters in Need
Alpha Phis are sisters for life – we support one another and help each other in times of need. The Alpha Phi Foundation helps, too, through two funds that benefit sisters when they need it most.   The Forget-Me-Not Fund assists Alpha Phi alumnae who are facing serious health problems, natural disasters, or other crises. The Emergency Aid Fund offers aid to any undergraduate member facing an interruption of her education because of an unforeseen financial crisis.  Most recently, this support has been used for sisters suffering from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana.  The availability of these funds show that Alpha Phi sisterhood is one that can withstand anything.
