Go Alpha Phi - Recruitment

For sorority and fraternity members at the George Washington University, Greek life means friends and fun. Scholarship and leadership. Mixers and formals. Community and campus-wide service projects. Greek life means a lifetime of memories and involvement. To the ladies of Alpha Phi, Greek life is all of these things and more. When you're an Alpha Phi, you are a member of an international group of sisters--friends and family forever.

Recruitment provides incoming students the opportunity to get a closer look at Greek organizations and the many roles they play in the betterment of the GW and D.C. communities. Also known as the "New Member Intake Process" or "Rush", Recruitment ensures growth, renewal, and continuation and is the most important factor in maintaining the livelihood of the Greek community. GW
Panhellenic Association hosts Formal Recruitment during the Fall semester and Alpha Phi will have the opportunity to recruit new members.

GW Alpha Phi - Where You Want To Be!

Alpha Phi is one of the most prominent sororities on campus, holding a membership of women hailing from across the country. GW's chapter offers its members an opportunity to grow in its traditions and to enhance their leadership skills through a network of sisters and opportunities.  The group of amazing young women are highly involved in campus activities, including Colonial Cabinet , club and varsity sports , honors organizations and the Student Association.  Our sisters hold internships throughout the city in a variety of offices in government offices, private firms and companies and non-profits.  Not only does Alpha Phi make its mark on campus but in the world of Alpha Phi as well.  Iota Iota just took the title of Self Challenge winners 2008 .  The Self Challenge urged sisters to sign up friends and family to the magazine's health challenge to promote a healthy lifestyle.  The challenge was open to all Alpha Phi chapters and GW's chapter came out on top signing up the most participants.

As VP of Member Recruitment and Director of Formal Recruitment it is our job to prepare the chapter for recruitment to make it fun and exciting weekend for all potential new members.  It is a truly unique experience that we hope you will all choose to take part in. We look forward to meeting you all in September!

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for Recruitment?
Any full-time GW student is eligible for recruitment. The Panhellenic Association has a minimum GPA requirement of 2.3 (cumulative).

How do I register for Recruitment?
Contact the George Washington Greek Life Office by phone at (202) 994-6555 or via e-mail greeks@gwu.edu. The office will provide you with recruitment registration and information materials.

How many reference letters do I need?
A reference letter can be a letter of recommendation from any sorority woman, sent to the chapters that you will attending during formal recruitment. You are not required to have letters of reference to participate in recruitment. It is strongly recommended that you take the time to get reference letters, however. Why? Because any extra information about you is helpful. Letters of reference help the chapter get to know you. The responsibility for providing reference letters rests with alumnae of each sorority on campus.

What do I do if I am a legacy?
Alpha Phi considers a legacy to be a sister, daughter, stepdaughter, or granddaughter of an Alpha Phi. To be acknowledged as a legacy, the Alpha Phi must complete a legacy information form, and send it to the chapter.

How much time does a sorority take?
All sororities have a chapter meeting every week. There, members receive information on chapter events and participate in sorority activities. New members have separate weekly meetings to learn more about their new sororities. As a member of a sorority, you will have access to a host of activites: From study sessions, informational programs and community service to sisterhood events, chapter retreats, parties, mixers, formals and so much more. After all, the more you put into your new sorority, the more you'll get out of it.

How much is a sorority going to cost?
On average, the new member semester is the most expensive, due to several one-time fees. After initiation, the dues are reduced for the remaining semesters. Each sorority has its own dues structure. In Alpha Phi, dues are inclusive and cover all recruitment, social, sisterhood and philanthropy activities. Dues exclude items like T-shirts, jewelry, and other miscellaneous items. The average cost for a sorority is $400 a semester.
